Installing a WordPress Plugin
The first thing a novice needs to know after the installation of WordPress is how to get a WordPress plug-in installed. Plugs allow you to create new WordPress functions such as a galleries, slideshows, etc. WordPress has hundreds of free and commercial WordPress plug-ins. We will show you how to download and use a WordPress plug-in in this step-by-step tutorial.
When you use WordPress.com, you cannot use plug-ins. Often we receive grievances from people who say they can't see the plugin menus in their WordPress dashboards. It' because you use WordPress.com, which has its limits. It is not possible to download plug-ins to WordPress.com unless you update to their businessplan.
You can also add any plug-in to your self-hosted WordPress. org website right after unpacking it (see the difference between self-hosted WordPress.org and WordPress.com). When you want to change from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, see our WordPress.com to WordPress.org to learn how to correctly do this.
In order to make it simple, we have prepared a short installation guide for a WordPress plug-in which you can view below. However, if you just want to obey the text prompts, you can use our step-by-step guide on how to get a WordPress plug-in installed. There are three ways of doing this: installation of a WordPress plug-in via searching, upload of a WordPress plug-in and manual installation of a WordPress plug-in via FTP.
To install a WordPress plug-in the simplest way is to use the plug-in finder. However, the only disadvantage of this feature is that there must be a plug-in in the WordPress plug-in folder that is restricted to free plug-ins. The first thing you need to do is go to your WordPress administration area and click Add New plug-ins.
You can find the plug-in by entering the name of the plug-in or the desired function as we did. Choose the plug-in that is best for you. As we searched for our float social bar, which happens to be the first plug-in, we will click on the'Install Now' icon.
Now WordPress will start downloading and installing the plug-in for you. You will then see the successful completion screen with a shortcut to activating the plug-in or returning to the plug-in installation program. WordPress plugins can be used on your website, but will not work if you do not enable them. Click on the Enable Plug-in button to enable the plug-in on your WordPress page.
That' all, you have successfully reinstalled your first WordPress plug-in. Configuring the plug-in configuration is the next stage. Those preferences will differ for each plug-in, so we won't cover that in this article. Payed WordPress plug-ins are not included in the WordPress plug-ins folder. You cannot install these plug-ins with the first installation procedure.
Therefore, WordPress has the Send button to send the files to WordPress. We' ll show you how to deploy WordPress plug-ins using the FTP upgrade feature in the administration area. First of all you have to get the plug-in from the sourcecode ( it will be a zip-file). Next you need to go to the WordPress administration area and see the " Adds new page " plug-ins.
Then click the Submit plug-in pushbutton at the top of the page. That will take you to the plug-in's upstream page. Click the Pick a Plug-in icon and browse to the Plug-in that you have previously loaded onto your computer. Once you have chosen the desired installation you must click the Apply Now icon.
Now WordPress uploads the plug-in from your computer and installs it for you. Once the setup is complete, you will see a successful completion like this. Following setup, you must click the Activate plug-in button to begin using the plug-in. Your configuration should be according to your needs.
Those preferences will differ for each plug-in, so we won't cover that in this article. Occasionally, your WordPress host may have limitations on the files that you can upload from the administration panel. The best thing to do in this case is to use FTP to automatically reinstall the plug-in.
First, you need to fetch the plugins sources files (it will be a zipped file). Next, you need to unzip the zipped files on your computer. The extraction of the plug-in zipped creates a new directory with the same name. It is the directory you need to send to your website using an FTP server.
And if you don't have your FTP user name and your FTP account login, please ask your WordPress hoster. Subsequently load the directory you pulled from the zipped archive into the /wp-content/plugins/ directory on your webhost. Once you have uploaded the documents, you must go to the WordPress administration area and click on the Plugins button in the administration area.
On the Plug-in page you can see that your plug-in has been successfully deployed. Click on the Activate button below the plug-in. After activation, you may need to reconfigure the plug-in preferences. The WordPress plug-ins have their own preferences, which differ from plug-in to plug-in, so we will not describe them here.
Hopefully this has assisted you in learning how to use WordPress plug-ins. Also you can see our plugin section where we review the best WordPress plugs you can use to achieve what you want to do. Every article contains a step-by-step guide on how to set up plug-ins.
