Cedar Island Ct
Island of cedar wood CtThe Clinton Marina from a jetty on the north side of Cedar Island. Because Cedar Island is a former island in Long Island Sound that belongs to the city of Clinton, Connecticut in Middlesex County, Connecticut. The island is currently a semi-island adjacent to Hammonasset State Park in Madison, CT, as the Straits were filled in a municipal construction scheme to enhance the Hammonasset River through Clinton Harbor.
It is a one and a half kilometer long and a quarter kilometer broad island and is about a four meter kilometer from Clinton Harbor. Normally the summer inhabitants of the island are between 100 and 150 persons. Undiscovered west two-thirds of the island forms one of the few undiscovered coastal areas along the Connecticut coastline.
The remarkable flora comprises saltwater grass and string grass (Spartina species), sea plants (Prunus maritima), roses (Rosa rugosa) and juniper bushes, commonly known as "cedars" (Juniperus virginiana). The island also has a rich world of birds. Oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus) are often seen together with the Fish Eagle (Pandion haliaetus) and other sea birds that occur on the Long Island Sound bank.
Transport to and from the island is by ferry. Cedar Island Marina is the nearest harbour, about a four miles out. The island has five streets that form a coarse lateral "Figure 8" design. Streets cannot cope with vehicular transport.
