The FrontPage gave users the opportunity to make their name on the web. It had a good enough easy-to-use user experience to create quite an appealing website, and the ability to see the codes - supplemented by some of the later versions - provided more versatility. At a time when traditional manual coding of contacts and Hitcounters was required, FrontPage provided the opportunity to deploy these functions without the need for engineering expertise.
Meanwhile, Vermeer Technologies Inc. initially designed FrontPage in the mid-1990s. Many FrontPage configs were always tagged with "VTI" in a review of the initial creator. In 1996, Microsoft bought FrontPage from Vermeer and soon afterwards published its own copy of the game. Microsoft two years later introduced an express release with a reduced UI, and Microsoft commercialized both as writers to produce contents that could be displayed in IE.
The FrontPage was combined with Microsoft Office 2000 and Office XP as well as core PowerPoint and Word software. FrontPage was finalized in 2003, but was no longer part of Office. It is important to note that FrontPage was conceived as an Internet Explorer based text processor.
On the other hand, Internet Explorer was the only web site that could display pages that properly used front page server extensions. The server extensions were used to display essential interactivity, and without them the websites could not operate as foreseen. Front-page customers had to select hosters that would provide this interoperability. When Microsoft bundled Microsoft' front page with Office, some hosters were not enthusiastic about its server extensions.
Older technologies made it less likely that hosted websites would offer them and more difficult for site owners to operate their websites correctly. During the early 2000s, the evolving face of the web began to disparage them. This and other changes to the way the web works had a negative impact on FrontPage.
However, IE was not compatible with many web site styling and safety norms. As FrontPage came to light, it didn't really play a role; in 2004, IE had an 80% stake in the industry and hobbyists didn't give a damn about the rest. This conformity made life easy for the designers and resulted in disgrace for IE.
The FrontPage was primarily a Windows app. So FrontPage was more of an amorate item than a competitor like Dreamweaver. At the end of FrontPage's life, it was no longer available as a free or packaged service, which reduced the likelihood of acceptance by the user. WebDAV technology provided similar functionality to FrontPage Server Extensions, but most importantly, it could be used on virtually any web host client as well.
Web hosting and web development companies did not want to specialize in FrontPage because WebDAV provided much greater agility and a potentially greater community of users. For an inquisitive viewer, it was relatively simple to use FrontPage Hacks to see the content of whole web-enabled folders, and administrative passphrases were saved in easily downloadable and crackable file formats.
FrontPage produces non-standard coding, so few experts would consider it. In April 2009, Microsoft retired FrontPage Extensions in April 2009 and stopped providing enhanced protection in April 2014. Often web hosters had to use fragile and non-supported applications. This is a very poor concept on any web site subjected to the web.
What we knew as FrontPage has been revived as SharePoint designer. The SharePoint Designers look and feel very similar, but can only create contents that are hosted on a SharePoint serve. Microsofts started Expression Web for universal web designing that provided a low amount of FrontPage interoperability. Still, there are a fistful of hosters that still use FrontPage Extensions, and some folks still use FrontPage as a fundamental website designing utility.
