Yahoo! GeoCities is a web hostingservice. Established in November 1994[2] by David Bohnett and John Rezner, it was briefly known as Beverly Hills Internet (BHI) before being renamed GeoCities. On January 28, 1999, GeoCities was taken over by Yahoo!;[4] at the start, it was the third most viewed website on the World Wide Web.

Originally, the website user chose a "city" in which to place their website. Soon after Yahoo! took over, this policy was discontinued in favour of using Yahoo! member name in the URI. "The first Yahoo! GeoCities logotype (1999-2009). GeoCities was bought in January 1999 by Yahoo! for $3.57 billion in inventory, near the height of the dotcom boom, with Yahoo! taking over on May 28.

5 ][22][23] The takeover turned out to be highly disliked; consumers began to go en masse protesting the new Yahoo! conditions of use for GeoCities. Yahoo! quickly undid his choice. In July 1999, Yahoo! moved from neighborhood and residential addresses to the "Vanity " url through members' login name to Yahoo! ("www.geocities.com/membername").

One other website that tries to create an archives of broken-down GeoCities webpages is GeoCities.ws. 41 ] There is no official relation between GeoCities and geocities. ws. ws. because it is a totally different enterprise. GeoCities copied many locations into Geocities by default, many month after GeoCities closed.

Geocities. ws also pledged free web site support for 8 years, starting January 2018[update]. Geociti. es [42](closed 2011), WebCite and Oocities.com are other websites for this reason.
