Standard & Poor's, a firm that produces information and analyses, was established in 1860 by Henry Varnum Poor. As the S&P 500 was first named when its first equity index was launched in 1923, the Composite Index[14] began to track a small number of equities. In 1926, three years later, the composite index increased to 90 shares and in 1957 to its present 500.

In 1941, Poor's Publishing (Henry Varnum Poor's initial company) and Standard Statistics (founded in 1906 as Standard Statistics Bureau) joined forces to become Standard and Poor's Corporation. Our main day-to-day index was the "S&P 90", a value-weighted index made up of 90 equities. In addition, Standard & Poor's released a benchmark index of the shares of 425 companies in the industry on a per week basis.

S&P 500 is often used as a yardstick for general equity price performance as it comprises both equities of value and equities of value. 63, on October 10, 2002, during the 2002 turmoil on the markets. As well as an investment in an investment trust listed on the S&P 500 index, an investor may also acquire equities in an Exchange-traded Fund (ETF) which owns a portfolios of equities in the Standard & Poor's 500 index.

The S&P 500 also allows direct investment in all shares of the S&P 500, usually referred to as index-replication. The Chicago Mercantile Exchanges (CME) offer derivative future products (ticker symbol /SP for the full-size and /ES for the E-mini which is one fifth the physical /SP ) that follow the index and are traded on the trading floors in an open outlook or on the CME Globex trading platforms and are the most preferred products of the CME.
