I didn't know much about it when I made my first step into the WordPress world. Going blind to the store, I didn't know if I was doing things right. In order to keep you from following the same tortuous route, I'll be sharing some of the important takes I've learnt so far, such as how to get a strong audience foundation, what to add to your themes, and most of all, what to skip.

I have now brought my deeds together and have a boomin' mailinglist that I write every single times I approve a new design, which generates revenue that would otherwise have been wasted.

As soon as I had a strong customer basis, I realized that in order to keep them as regular clients, I had to give added value not only to my topics, but also to my service. Establishing a themes company means not only reselling themes, but also offering technical and update assistance. Several of the top makes are great product and offer great level of customer service.

Tell what you want about these businesses, but it is undeniable that their subscriber bases are loyally loyal, both because of their product and because of their customer service and maintenance. A way to make great contributions is to be on time with your answers. When you can afford killers assistance, you're already one up.

However, some people are more experienced than others, and they are usually the ones who buy topics on a regular basis. When you can deliver a source that allows these people to get more out of your product, they are more likely to stick with you and buy more of your designs.

A way to do this is to use a topic frame, whether you are yourself or a third person. The use of a frameworks to quickly create a topic is important when an enthusiastic crowd is there. The most important thing is that using the same frameworks makes it easy to update all your designs after they are published.

So for example, all of my themes show a message in the management area when an upgrade is available. Inside this filename are a number of other important pieces of coding that adds functionality, such as the Topic Option and User -Defined Postbox panels, as well as general functionality used in all of my themes.

If I need to upgrade this source I just make the changes to the frameworks files and they will be substituted in all my designs. Since I know that the files are the same in all my designs, I don't have to go through every topic to find the piece of code I want to upgrade.

Hybrids is one of the most beloved thematic frames, thanks to its comprehensive feature set, which includes translation into more than 20 different language and thematic hookes. Right from the start I opted to set up my own scaffolding, mainly because I would know it from the start, which would make maintenance and setup much simpler (being a checker would also have helped me decide).

Having a user-defined frameworks also means I don't have to depend on anyone else, and the frameworks had exactly what I needed and nothing else. Of course, this is just a matter of preferences, and many users choose to use a third-party vendor platform. Using third-party software saves you the amount of work required to build a robust frameworks.

This also means that you are not alone for the maintenance of the given environment, and you will usually have a system of assistance to turn to when you encounter problems with it. Lots of stunning works provide useful features such as topic hook, expandable layouts, style for common plug-ins, and more.

Finally, there is a growth of children's themes in framework such as Genesis, StartBox and Hybrid. According to the kind of topic you create, consumer expectation will differ. However, you should consider certain functions and functions for most of your designs. They don't have to do all of them, but at least consider whether they would give added value to your topic.

Internationalising your design allows the user to compile the text shown by your design, and implementation is quite simple. It astonished me how many non-English speakers download my designs. In retrospect, I should have internationalised my topics from the beginning, because I knew that WordPress was used by thousands of thousands of people around the globe.

A simple way to verify all this is to download and run the themesearch plug-in. A great little plug-in that does the same testing as WordPress. org will run on the topics submission.

On many occasions, the themes checked plug-in kept me from omitting important detail and using obsolete features. Create a detailed and useful document for your topics. Not only does this help your customers, it also reduces the number of incidents you receive from disgruntled customers. The fewer tickets you receive, the luckier you will be.

Documented everything that' s special about your topic that WordPress people may not be familiar with, as well as all built-in functions such as customized background and header, menu, and postal format. Also, give directions on how to upgrade the design and how to modify the coding (if a particular end users wants to make a sub design).

Twenty Eleven is a good example of a topic with well-documented source tree. A good example of well written coding can be found in the features. pdf document in the standard thesis Twenty Eleven. When releasing an upgrade, the developers must prevent themselves from writing over the modified data.

This is because they make their adjustments in a subordinate issue. So make sure that this feature is supported by enabling sub topics to be simply made. Unless you want the user to have to bother about involving a particular script in the creation of a subordinate topic, use the get_template_directory_uri(); command to point to the subordinate topic's directory.

Instead, to allow the programmer to write over this filename, use get_stylesheet_directory_uri();, which points to the sub-topic directory if one is used. Their design should allow for the various page styles that a WordPress Web site can have. Since you don't know how each of the developers will use the topic, you have to be prepared for all the options.

You should at least back these template for a common WordPress theme: page. php, archives. php, 404. php, searching. php, singles. php, attachment. php and of course index. php, which is the ultimative fall-back. WordPress' "Template Hierarchy" is a good place to look. Two of the most frequent ones I included with my designs are one with a widgettized side bar (the standard page. php) and one with a full width page. You' ll probably be able to create other template designs that would help your audience once you've created the design of the topic.

A number of themes designers use user-defined boxes instead of page styles for this feature. It doesn't seem to be intuitive, because the WordPress function is integrated and so easily to use. The creation of a personal page style is as straightforward as the creation of a new PHP script in the topic directory and the addition of the following PHP comments above (replace "Full Width" with the style name of your choice):

It seems that there is a misconception about what consumers are expecting from prime themes. There is a general feeling that they are expecting an optional panels that looks like the front of a Boeing 747, where they can optimize the smallest detail of the subject. If you decide whether you want to add an optional feature to your design, consider whether it is really necessary and whether this feature is already integrated in WordPress.

And the more choices you choose, the more complex the coding becomes and the more steep the learn curves for you. One of my goals is to make a topic that doesn't even require an option panel, and I' m going to keep the option panels for my themes limited to the basics. Now you can base your theme's option set on one of the many great option sets.

Part of the purpose of building an option pane is to allow the users to optimize the look of the topic without having to play around with the source for it. The addition of a logotype is the simplest way for a designer to personalise their design. I' m activating it in all my subjects. This is a quick shot of the option page in my latest business topic (based on the Option Framework).

The majority of thematic purchasers are not designer. Additionally to the customization settings for the topic's key items (such as the text colour, the call-to-action buttons colour, etc.), I provide a set of skin choices that are essentially just predefined themes from which a given operator can choose. In this way, if the end users have no eyes for colour, they have at least a few choices and are not limited to one schema.

And because the way these link sites are designed and placed varies from topic to topic, you can offer an optional feature that allows your customers to tailor the link. In the past, I recommended adding networking features to the theme's panels, but now that I've thought about it, I think I'm better off with a plug-in.

Every single passing day, there are new types of online sites, and it's difficult to anticipate which ones your topic will be on. You' ll never be able to handle all base types, which is why I recently developed a plug-in that I will soon be able to support in all my themes, and I suggest that you do the same if you intend to include this one.

User can choose from a number of symbols integrated into the plug-in or design (if any) or choose to have their own uploaded. So if you're interested, the plug-in is named Social Bartender and is located in the WordPress repository. A lot of folks want to monetise their website and so promotional opportunities would be important to them.

What you skip is almost as important as what you involve in the topic. A lot of topics have features and functions that can be done better as plug-ins or that are already integrated in WordPress. Utilize the features WordPress already provides, such as user-defined background, headings, thumbnail views, and postal format.

WordPress does all the hard work, and many people are already comfortable with it. However, if your design doesn't need this feature, then you shouldn't embed it at all! I have seen themes that have shortcuts for quotation marks, quotations, and headings, but no HTML tag style matching them.

A lot of people will move from topic to topic and already have contents on their website when they enable yours. The HTML tag remains the same, but shortcuts differ from topic to topic. Do not add an option for things that should really be added with legacy plug-ins, such as Google Analytics andavicons.

In the background I overhear someone ask: "Why not do things like that? "Well, what if the background individual chooses to change topics, even to another one of yours? There is no need for this feature, it would make the source tree too complex, and it would cause problems if the users changed the subject.

Only add features that change the features that are specific to your design; otherwise it's better for a plug-in. Option Frameworks plug-in, Devin Price A great tool to quickly create an option page for your design.
