The India Standard Time (IST) is 5:30 hrs before the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). It is used during the standard time in : The India Standard Time is a half-hour time area. Although the federal administration has repeatedly denied to divide the land into several time zoning, labor legislation, such as the Plantations Labor Act, 1951, allows central and state administrations to determine the location time for a particular industry area[8] In Assam, teagardens are followed by a distinct time zoning known as Chaibaga or Bagan ("Tea Garden Time"), which is one hours before the IST[9] Still Indian Standard Time is the only official time used.

For 25 years now, Jahnu Barua has been promoting his own time zones (summer time). He proposed in 2010 to create a distinct time zoning for the development of the north-eastern region.[10] In 2014, the Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, began a campaign for an additional time zoning for Assam and other north-eastern states of India.[11] However, the suggestion would need to be approved by the central government of India.
