The Los Alamos ( "Los Alamos" or LANL for short) is the United States Department of Energy's own nationwide lab originally organised during the Second World War to develop atomic weaponry as part of the Manhattan Project. At the end of 1942, Los Alamos was chosen as a strictly confidential site for the development of the air raid and was put into operation the following year.

The Los Alamos was the center for overall engineering and co-ordination, while the other laboratories, now known as Oak Ridge and Argonne, focused on the manufacture of titanium and titanium bombshells. The Los Alamos was the centrepiece of the effort and brought together some of the world's most renowned researchers, including many Nobel laureates.

At that time, the site was known as Project Y, Los Alamos Laboratory and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Laboratory's existance was made known to the public after the Second Word War, when it became commonly known as Los Alamos. The Department of Energy founded a second laboratory in 1952 under the leadership of the University of California, Berkeley, and became the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

Today, Los Alamos is one of the biggest scientific and technological facilities in the United States. Research is multi-disciplinary in areas such as public safety, aerospace research, thermonuclear fusion, renewables, medicine, nanotech and super computing. Los Alamos, New Mexico, just south of the laboratory, experienced strong growth during this time.

Following several reorganisations, the LANL is currently administered and run by Los Alamos National Security (LANS) in the city of Los Alamos. Established during World War II as a clandestine, central institution to co-ordinate the Manhattan Project's research, the Allied development of the first atomic wars.

By September 1942, the difficulty of carrying out preparatory research on nukes at university level throughout the nation showed the need for a lab devoted exclusively to this use. Leslie Groves wanted a lab in an isolation site to ensure security and keep researchers away from the population.

The Jemez Springs was only a stone's throw away from its present location. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project's science manager, had lived in New Mexico during his early years and proposed the Los Alamos Ranch School on the Meza. Work in the lab peaked in the development of several experimental instruments, one of which was used in the first test at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945, code-named "Trinity".

On 16 October 1945, the lab was awarded the Army-Navy'E' Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing. Much of the initial "luminaries" of Los Alamos decided to abandon the lab, and some even became resolute adversaries of the further evolution of atomic warfare. At a number of meetings, the lab drew attention to itself.

During 1999, Los Alamos researcher Wen Ho Lee was charged with 59 cases of misconduct in the handling of classified information by download of secret information - "weapon codes" used for computer simulation of atomic weapon testing - onto tape and for removal from the laboratory. 17 ] Lee had been alleged to have been sharing U.S. atomic mysteries with China, but detectives could never determine what Lee had done with the downloads.

In 2000, two computer disks with classed information were heralded as having disappeared from a safe area within the facility, but were later found behind a copier; in 2003, the facility's principal, John Browne, and the assistant principal, stepped down after accusing two informants of having wrongly fired two informants who had allegedly committed a large-scale larceny in the facility.

In 2000, the lab was subjected to extra hardship: the Cerro Grande Fire, a heavy wood fire that devastated several houses (and staff houses) and closed the lab for two week. As a reaction, Peter Nano's managing partner closed down large parts of the lab and blamed the researchers working there in public for a relaxed stance on safety practices.

They also quote Nanos with the words: "If I have to start the lab again with 10 guys, I will do it". Information, Sience and Technology uses theoretical progress, algorithmic and ephemeral development of high-performance computers to speed up the integration and prediction capabilities of methods. Material for the Future Pillar aims to optimise material for domestic safety application by forecasting and monitoring their performances and functions through exploration research and technology.

NPP Pillar addresses the intransigence of system recognition and characterisation in the fields of international safety, defence, energy generation and heath. Signature Sciences integrate atomic experimentation, theoretical and simulated approaches to understanding and developing intricate atomic phenomenon. By partnering with governments, labs, universities daily and industries, Los Alamos brings together scientific, technological, research and technological expertise to maximize the effect on policy priority areas of the country's public safety.

In order to promote this collaboration, Los Alamos runs three major consumer facilities: The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE): Los Alamos Neutron Science Center is one of the most efficient neutron colliders in the galaxy. The LANSCE provides the science communities with intensive neutron resources capable of carrying out civil and nuclear research support missions.

The plant is funded by the Ministry of Energy, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Office of Science and the Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology. Los Alamos National Laboratory'sulsed field facility runs an advanced application programme for high field research. LANL, supported by the National Science Foundation, runs one of the three National High Magnetic Field Laboratories in collaboration with and at two other locations of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, and the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory ist an affiliate of JointGenome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, Kalifornien. The JGI was established in 1997 to bring together the genomic mapping-, genomic sequence-, technological and information science capabilities and capabilities developed at the three genomic centres of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) at the University of California, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and LANL.

The Los Alamos National Labouratory housed the archives of alXiv e-print until 1999. 31 ] The archXiv is currently run and financed by Cornell University. Over the last few years, the lab has been developing a large research programme for modelling system biological processes, known at LANL as q-bio. In addition, around 120 DOE staff are based in the lab to take over government supervision of the work and operation of LANL.
