Creating and customizing your Google Material Design theme exclusive to Sketch
Google launched I/O 2018 last weekend at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, and alongside a host of thrilling events, they presented their visions for the material designs of the Future. Google re-invented its paradigm for creating applications with the introduction of Material Designs in 2014, leading developers to rethink how people should interactively work with their applications.
While the system worked and was widely used, while user-friendliness was improving, the materials styling was tight and many materials applications were similar and did not match the make or model for which they were made. You are building a system that provides policing and consistent designs, but is sufficiently agile to be used by a wide range of different labels and designer with very different people?
With the latest version of its designsystem Google tries to reply to this questions. Material Design's next level extends its current fundament by offering new utilities and policies that allow specifiers to more flexibly customize material designs to their own brands, languages and locations, while retaining the same superior levels of usability for which Material Designs is known.
What's most interesting for us at Sketch is that creating designs for materials is now simpler than ever with the new Theme Editor, a Sketch-exclusive plug-in that lets you quickly build a design system for your materials application and adapt it to your current market.
Sketch Theme Editor is an unbelievably powerfull utility that lets you build your own brand-name symbol library in Sketch, with full controls over your own unique style, including colour, form and text. Rachel Been's Keynote can be found in the Materials Theme Editor here or further reading to learn more about the infinite options with the Materials Plugin in Sketch.
Sketch's Theme Editor for Materials makes it unbelievably simple to deploy colour schemes across your whole theme system, so you can automatically deploy colours to your component by selecting elementary, subordinate, background, text and symbol colours. Select colours from the materials colour range, create a tone range of 10 colour tones from a single colour and even verify colour contrasts to ensure your styles comply with barrier-free requirements.
Media Plugin provides one-click control over all symbol collection in media artwork, as well as the new and beautiful two-tone symbol theme. Up to three scripts can be added to your designs and you can quickly and easily browse Google's favorite scripts to create the typeface for your type. As soon as you have selected your writings, you can adjust the size of your writings automaticly and optimise for the legibility, on the basis of the rules of the materialtypografie.
So if you want to design your own Materials Design theme, you can get the Materials Plugin here. Googles has created an elaborate documentary and a really useful movie to help you get up and running with the Theme Editor in Sketch. You need Sketch 49 or higher and High Sierra 10 for the plugin.
It also provides easy accessibility to the material components libraries and the option to directly load drawing surfaces onto the Gallery - a Gallery at Gallery?-?a to share, organize, and collaborate on your material designs. We' ve worked with Google extensively on this plug-in and are very curious about it. Material Design Editor really shows what's possible with Sketch's plug-in system.
Underneath the bonnet this is an unbelievably complicated plug-in with many movable parts, but for Sketch players it's wonderfully easy and turns the huge job of creating a system into an almost mundane one. Our development team has a lively development base and an extensive plug-in eco-system, and we'd be happy if you'd join.
