Paste said in 2008, "It's undeniable that we've left the gold era of the TV show's title track behind." Almost 10 years later, when new shows appear every week on every imaginable (and so far unimaginable) stage, we are not so sure. TV is probably better than ever, but have the tunes survive as an integrated part?
Somehow yes: The two greatest shows broadcast between 2008 and today, Maj Men and Breakaking Bad, featured each of the episodes with an unforgettable creditsequence capturing an essential part of the show - Maj Men's rattling drum and string melodrama, Breakaking Bad's boiling slideshow guitars and dark hiss.
However, it was essentially atmospheric tunes, something like the squeaky Techno that now brings you out of Silicon Valley. At times these silent songs are just plain golden, like the unruly Waltz that starts every Curb Your Enthusiasiasm - or, for that matter, it' s M*A*S*H* - but it's not the Archie and Edith pianistic gear or the old-fashioned photographs in front of cheese, if the theme of a show could tell you a little history itself.
At the same time, the emergence of a) trend-setting streamers like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflx, and b) great shows that appear all of a sudden in formerly anonymized network (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on The CW) has opened the flood gates to anyone who wants to peg a title track and stand out.
These are the 50 best TV theme tunes of all time.

An unforgettable theme tune is an underestimated key feature that will help turn a great picture into an iconic one.... Essentially, a piece of music should captivate the atmosphere and give the sound of what is going on in a particular area. However, the title track, if done right, can be as iconoclastic as the picture itself.
A lot of filmmusic writers have decided to compose a theme that completely summarizes what a piece is about to do, but only a few have become the greatest. Probably the most celebrated motion picture writer is John Williams, who is well featured on this playlist. Willyams is the musician behind some of the biggest Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Superman, Jaws and the Star Wars films.
This soundtrack is as unforgettable and iconical as the music. Large cinematic topics are often instrumental pieces that are easy to recognize during playback. Topics from Rocky, Batman, The Godfather franchise, 2001: A Space Udyssey, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Psycho are among the best known and have long since become popular music.
They can be heard in advertising and often at sports tournaments. What you should keep in mind when choosing your favourite title track is that we choose to choose only the theme, not the whole scores or music. The Ultimate List is specifically for title tracks, so tune in what you think is the best film ever.
When you think a theme is lacking, you are welcome to do so.
