Gogol's fight for independence from the clan, which he sometimes finds awkward, is an essential characteristic of the novel. Some of the Namesake's educational novel definition, a coming-of-age novel with Gogol as the leading character, matches some of the narrative terms used in the novel. Though our look at the lives of Ashoke and Ashima places them at the centre of the novel, it is Gogol who becomes the leading actor and whose evolution we most likely observe.

The Namesake follows Gogol's evolution from a child to a young man, investigating his training and the various incidents that have shaped him. He is an impartial thought leader, and he rebelled against certain things in his lifetime that connect him to a place (India) with which he felt less attached than his family.

The decision to lawfully alter his name, which he did himself before he left for Yale, shows this independence and rebelliousness. From this point on, the folks he encounters forward in the novel will know him only as Nikhil - and he is angry and disconcerted when his folks, who attend his colleges, forgot the switch and call him Gogol.

Beginning to create an autonomous New York lifestyle for himself, one that includes a revolting (as his parent would not approve) relationship with Maxine. Only after his father's passing the familiy becomes a key aspect of Nikhil/Gogol's lives again, so that he asks himself how he can deal with it when his mom, Ashima, packs her house and prepares to depart for India.

Following the events in Gogol's lifetime, from his parental exit to his career, his main romance ties and his father's passing, Lahiri offers a viewpoint that allows the readers to visualize the motivation behind each of Gogol's decisions and how he responds to the challenge he faces.

For example, we see that his passion for arquitecture is sparked by an early Taj Mahal trip, and then we see how this inspires his design of his house, which first links him to Ruth, his first lover, and then to his later architectural years. The quiz of cause and effect is one in which the readers have the ability to read Gogol's choices in more than one way, and Lahiri provides a lot of materials for us to discuss.
