Berners-Lee Web Daddy DRMs HTML5 to 2016 - The Register

Final date for the real charters is 30 June 2015. It is a blow to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which formally objected to the addition of Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) - which would allow DRM rendering - to the HTML5 specification. EFF formally objected immediately after Jaffe had announced his contribution.

Jaffe's position was a reply to an open mail to Tim Berners-Lee from the EFF, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and others who were against the EME. EFF has now reacted to the new W3C Charta with a blogs article entitled "Lowering your standards". Danny O'Brien, Director, said that the EFF was "deeply disappointed" that encoding was now incorporated into the HTML 5 and 5.1 standard.
