This guide describes how to use a variety of templates to build a custom or project-based Web area that harmonizes with the department's default Web page design. There are two example pages that show the look and feel of the page templates. _GO ( Although the example page menus list several pages, only the Home and Other pages are actually included. )

This example pages and the associated data serve as a template for the construction of an own web area. They use XHTML 1.0 for the contents and 2.1 Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for the fonts and page layouts. To highlight the menus JavaScript is used. Adjust the menus. If you want the primary resource with its #include directive to remain untouched, so that your pages can keep up with all your locale style changes, and you can modify a common page list by modifying a particular one. Please dowload the example archives of the example data. Extract this in order to make a folder with the name samples and then move the data to your assigned web area.

Verify that the folder and all data are globally legible. You are not displayed correctly as locale data. There is a photo on the pattern homepage that is not your image. You can either substitute the headershot image. JPEG with another 120×150 pixels JPEG image, or remove the line in the index. html image that refers to it.

Set the samples to an empty picture. If you have a logotype or other picture to view, substitute the filename header. gif with another GIF image of the same size. As an alternative, you can use a JPEG or PNG picture by modifying the B&W definitions in the . html images.

On each page, a navigational menus is displayed on the right side. Example menus show several pages, although only two of them actually exists. Choose a first sentence of pages (you can edit this later) and edit the common.inc. with a text editing tool. Default page design is to highlight the currently selected item with JavaScript codes.

To do this, each item in the menus is assigned a value of its own corresponding filename in the form of a unique identifier. When changing items in the menus, the ID value changes according to the filenames. Exceptions are the homepage settings. The id value must be the same as the name of the containing folder.

This is usually your Unix user name for a private page. Usually for a projects page this is the name of the projects folder. Homepage, called index. html, was initialised with dates for a fictional prof. Modify this page and substitute the information with your own. This email record uses a JavaScript atcs( username) feature to create a legitimate email anchor from a hidden format that is less apparent to webrawlers.

In order to use this, simply modify sample's nickname in the source to your own nickname or mailing address. As an alternative, you can simply substitute the line with a plain mailto: link if you' d rather not use such tricks. Next, make the extra pages you added to the menus.

Make a copy of the other. html (not index. html, which is untypical) for each page and substitute the real contents for the text of the dolly. Make sure you are editing the titles of each web page you create. It is located at the front of the image containing the Meta data, so it can be easily overlooked; but it is important because it is used by browser for windows and bookmarks.

Unless you modify the heading, your pages will be marked My Website and My Other Material. Instead, you can use your name for the home page heading and include a prefix like -Research for other pages. Due to the use of server-side include, you need to have them installed on the website and referenced by typing in URLs instead of searching your file on your hard drive or in /cs/wwww. Your pages have the best chances of looking good in more than one browser if they are current HTML.
