Starting with WordPress: Get started with your new website
This tutorial will present the Dashboard and go over the first few adjustments you'll need to make when you first set up your site, and conclude today's session with the basic principles for building your first pages and postings (including a quick look at the difference between the two).
This is your login information for your WordPress page. There are a number of places from here that you can familiarize yourself with relatively quickly when you start managing the contents. Some of the things you will noticed in WordPress is that there are often many ways to get to the same place, the way you use it depends on what works for you.
Let's begin with a short run. On top of the page is the admin panel, and as with most WordPress, the contents in this panel are context-sensitive, as in what you see in this area depends on where you are in WordPress.
Instead of focusing on reading through the different parts of the page bars and menu from top to bottom, we will concentrate on the things that need to be done intelligently from the beginning; things that help get your website marketable, rather than just learn how to make WordPress.
Well, since the fundamentals are good, let's consider the addition of contents. Well, one of the things I see with new WordPress pages is guys who dive in and create pages and postings without really having a clear assault plot, and if your website is a fun game about getting acquainted with the fun of WordPress, well that could be good.
But if you have website blueprints, it's much better to have a blueprint for your website contents and website layout before you immerse yourself and make things that are insignificant. In this first example page, which is a face-to-face blogsite, we have a few different types of contents that we want to use, and we have a page layout in the back of our minds that looks something like this:
The majority of websites begin to look something like this, and the contents develop like the website. The way you organize the site, however, may vary depending on how you want to use it. It is a private blogs for exchanging thoughts, finding something nice on the web, favorite quotations and video etc..
However, your website can be a commercial website and your blogs can be secondaries and do not need space on the front page. Configuring your website involves a modification of the settings, but before we go there, we will discuss the difference between postings and pages, so you may be better able to determine the direction in which you will be structuring your title page.
Contributions and pages are both contents and, although they have many resemblances, there are also some variations that are unique to each one. Put in simple terms, the difference is no different than for different publication types: Sides are like a book, post like a magazine. Generally, pages contain fairly static contents; once you've posted them, it's possible to modify them, but not something you need to revise over time.
Sites are like a hardcover in a bookcase, their contents are useful in the long run. You can also build pages in a hierarchical way in your page tree and you can assign them different types of layouts according to the template available in your topic (and yes, that's one way the metaphor ends).
Contributions, on the other side, are time-critical, they can be categorized, they are also added to your news reader (people can sign them up). On your blogs page or title page, they appear in reversed order chronologically and have been less frequently added to your menus due to their better availability.
As in a magazin.... time-critical, mostly piled up according to the latest above, categorized by date and contents and generally more interesting in the near future than in the long run. When it is simpler to have a graphical illustration of what it looks like, here is a graphical display where you can see where there is a transition between different kinds of contents and where there are variations.
Begin with the Admin Panel and click the New button at the top, a pop-up will appear, and one of the elements you can make from there is a page. OR, if you selected the Pages hyperlink, you can be in the Page Listings section, you can see a hyperlink at the top of the image that says: Add New.
Place your mouse pointer in the edit area and begin input! If you want to insert a section at the end of your text, just press either the arrow key or the arrow key, if you only want to go down half a step, press the arrow key and the arrow key to insert a line feed. If your contents look like you want to click Submit when you're not quite set to submit and want to store your contents to come back later, just click the Submit Design Button.
We' ll learn in a later tutorial how to manipulate and customize macros, in the meantime we will be adding a new entry - and here's a mystery... while there's no home icon in the macros (we'll be adding that later), click on your page heading to get back to the home page.
Different areas allow different types of mail formats and different ways to classify your contributions by category. We' ll explain the formats in the next tutorial, because now we want to concentrate only on the classification of our article. We will also look at how to do this in the next tutorial.
However, well, you are now in the process of building the framework and contents of your website! But you may have one more thing you want to do, and it would be incorrect for me to let you hang, what if your website is not a blogs?! OK, let's take a look at how your website is structured with a fixed title page.
So now you know how to make pages and postings, and you might have thoughts about how you want to structure your front page. So if you are satisfied that it lists your contributions, you can retire from the tutorial at this point and join us next but if you want to know how to customize your title page display for fixed page contents and a seperate blogsite, read on.
So let us say our page layout looks less like described above and looks more like this: If you want to modify where our blogs are listed and have a statical page for your front page, you need to actually build the statical pages, and that's it. Name them Home, Blogs and Services just to make it simple.
In fact, I have put no contents in it, in fact, you put nothing on the blogs page, but you need to put contents to the home and services pages when you are done. Once that's done, you'll need to click on the Reading Settings page - if you've noticed that you're changing the checkbox currently on " Your Latest Posts" to mirror the pages you want to make your cover page and your post page.
As soon as you've done that, click Save Changes and jump to your home page to see your changes in effect. Here is my statical homepage without content: Here is my blogs page: We' ll first want to delete commentaries from fixed pages, we' ll also want to optimize the menus, but that's enough for today.
Beginning your website projekt with a small blueprint of how your website will be organized will spare you a host of long-term problems where you might find yourself typing and transcribing articles and pages to adapt the website to your contents. First, design, then construct your website according to your website contents model, whether your website contents are suitable for pages or articles or a mix of both.
