Plug-ins are utility programs that add extra features to your applications. In order to install a plugin, you only have to put the plugin file into the folder wp-content/plugins. As soon as a plugin is already present, you can enable or disable it via the plugin menue in your Windows XP administrator. You can install plug-ins directly from the administrator area in WordPress 2.7 and higher.
Upload the plugin to your computer, then login to your WP administration area and go to Plugins > Create New. Go to the plugin library and choose it. Click Install Now and the plugin will be soon available. Just delete the folder for the plugin you want to deinstall and it will be disabled for you.
Always remember that not all plug-ins are simple to install, so always read the manual and install guide first.
Instructions on how to install WordPress plugins by hand
The installation of plug-ins from the WordPress Dashboard is so simple that you probably never need to know how to install a plugin manual via FTP. However, the technology is still useful to know if the WordPress Plugin Directory is down or not available. Follow the instructions below to install a plugin via FTP using the Gallery plugin as an example:
From the WordPress Plugin Directory website, go to the Plugin page. Press the green down arrow key to open the Plugin-Zip dialog and click the down arrow key to open the plugin zip dialog. Extract the plugin data. Any plug-ins downloadable from the plugin directory are in Zip form. The majority of OSes (Windows, Mac, etc.) have built-in Zip opening utilities.
Once the zip has been opened, unzip the folder it contains and place it in an easy-access folder on your computer. FTP to the website servers. In case you have difficulties with the connection to your web site, please consult your web site host and ask for support in connection to your web site via FTP.
Browse to the wp-content file within the WordPress install for your website or blogs. Your WordPress install might have a different storage site depending on your hostname. Browse to the /wp-content/plugins subdirectory. The plugin and theme folders and some others are located in this subdirectory. Browse to the plugin subdirectory.
All plug-ins are located in this subdirectory. The plugin file should be uploaded to the /wp-content/plugins subdirectory on your webhost. Plugin folders after the plugin (e.g. if you want to load the Gallery plugin, the /gallery folders is used) contain all plugin file names. Navigate to the Dashboard Plugin page and you will see the new plugin list.
When an error occurs, clear all recently-uploaded files and start again.
