The fact that designer fashions come and go so quickly makes it simple for your website to look outdated if you don't upgrade the look every few years or so. WorldPress has made it simple for you to change to a new topic without affecting the contents of your website - you don't have to waste a day making an expensive change.
However, it is still a good concept to correctly schedule the launch of your redesign, especially if you have a large website with a large amount of visitor activity. It is important to back up both your WordPress and your WordPress databases before you do anything if something goes awry and you need to return to your initial theme.
Backing up your databases varies slightly according to your web host. WordPress.org's extensive WordPress.org companion provides just about everything you need to know. When you fight, there are some plug-ins that can help you. I' d strongly suggest WordPress Duplicator as it makes it simple to make a copy of your website for trial use ( see below 3).
Yet another premier back-up plug-in that' s definitely well worth looking at is isBackupBuddy ($80 for up to 2 locations). The VaultPress software launches from $5 per months and automatically backs up every day using a plug-in. They can also be very useful if your website is ever compromised or you want to switch to a new one.
Re-designing is a great way to get your site cleaned up by repairing bad hyperlinks, removing spammers' remarks, and removing old plug-ins and topics. Begin by removing all plug-ins and designs that you do not use. Each plug-in you deploy is a potentially vulnerable point for your site to provide maximal protection against attackers, minimize the use of your plug-in, and make sure you upgrade to new releases as they become available.
It is also a good idea to make sure that you are using the latest WordPress release. Optimise your databases to erase idle information and accelerate your website. WP-DBManager plug-in does this for you in a pleasant way. Acismet is a good anti-spam plug-in, but if you were too rotten to let your spammers through in the first place, it may take a while for you to remove all your old comment.
Accelerate the proces by modifying your monitor settings to show more comment per page, or by entering the data base and executing a PHP instruction to remove comment. Of course, there is also a practical plug-in to do this! Correct defective hyperlinks simply with the Link Checker plug-in.
If you haven't already done so, consider to install some safety plug-ins to secure your WordPress install. The All In One WP Firewall is a great plug-in that protects your website from a variety of different threats. SiteCheck Sucuri plug-in is also useful for checking your website for viruses and warning you when your website is at risk.
It' always best to test a new WordPress site before switching to a new design or making major changes to your site. Trial pages are also useful for trying out plug-ins and widgets without compromising your website. In an ideal case, your test page should be exactly the same as your own site - a topic on a new installation of WordPress may work well, but when it comes to installation on your current website, there is a possibility of conflicts with a plug-in or other issue.
In order to replicate your website on your trial install, you must have imported the stored data base in stage 1 and have uploaded all your related contents to it. It can be a bit of a trick, but the easiest way I've found is to use the WordPress Duplicator plug-in I talked about intep 1.
I will write a detailled how to use this plug-in in another post. Once you have set up your test page, verify that all the plug-ins you are using are in place and enable them before you enable your new design. Use the Regenerate thumbnail plug-in to re-create your miniatures. A few topics come with customized page styles, and if you want to use them for some of your pages, you'll need to go to each page to modify the style sheet yourself.
When you want to make this modification in large quantities, it is simpler to make it from the page display. When your new design has options in the Dashboard, make a notice of what you are changing so that you can do the same on the live page. Be sure to make any changes or imports you have made to the test site.
It took a few minutes for more complex editing or the Regenerate Thumbnails plug-in to do its work, because you have a large number of pictures, you will probably want to temporary disable it. You can use the WP Maintenance Mode plug-in to let your customers know that your website is unavailable during the up-grade.
Be sure to disable the plug-in once you have completed your edit and test. You have successfully started a redesign! Be sure to inform your reader about the changes and attach a screenshots of how you want it to look. Changing your WordPress topic may seem like a whole bunch of trouble, but in fact most of the suggestions given here are just a safety measure in case something goes south.
Most of the time, you can simply choose your new topic from the Dashboard and go your happy way. Please include practical hints, utilities or plug-ins for starting a WordPress redesign in your comment.
