What are the time zone limits in India?

IST is the time recorded throughout India and Sri Lanka with a time difference of UTC+05:30. No summer time (DSTu) or other seasonality is recorded in India. IST is referred to as E* ("Echo-Star") in air and army time. India's standard time is computed on the base of 82.

Following independency in 1947, the India administration set the IST as the formal time for the entire nation, although Calcutta and Mumbai maintained their own times (known as Calcutta Time and Bombay Time until 1948 and 1955, respectively). Summer time (summer time) was used briefly during the China-Indian War of 1962 and the Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971.

Residents of the northeast states must bring their watches forward at dawn and prevent additional power usage after dawn. At the end of the 80s, a research project recommended dividing the land into two or three time zone to save power. What they were proposing was a logic of a system of returning to the time zone of the UK period; the recommendation was not adopted.

During 2001, the authorities created a four-member board under the Ministry of Science and Technology to assess the need for multi-time zone and summer time. Although the federal administration has repeatedly resisted dividing the land into several time zoning areas, employment legislation, such as the Plantations Labor Act, 1951, allows central and state administrations to determine the amount of times a particular industry area can be localised.

Teahardens are followed by a distinct time zones known as Chaibaga or Bagan ("Tea Garden Time"), which is one Hour before IST. The Indian normal time is the only official time used. For 25 years now, Jahnu Barua has been promoting his own time zones (summer time).

During 2010, he proposed to create a distinct time zoning for the development of the north-eastern region. AssamTarun Prime Minister Gogoi began a campaign in 2014 for an additional time zones for Assam and other North Eastern Indian states, but the suggestion would have to be approved by the central government of India.

The DST has been invited to consider a suggestion for the creation of an East India time zone extension (EIT @ UTC+6:00), which would shift the standard IT to +5:00 hours and summer time (IDT for IST and EID for EIT) from 14 April (Ambedkar Jayanti) to 2 October (Gandhi Jayanti).
