In 1978 Bob Marley was by far the most famous Reggae player in the whole wide range of music and a great celebrity in Great Britain and Europe as well as in his homeland Jamaica. But he was still little more than a cultic character in the United States, and according to many reports Marley was anxious to win a wider public in America and saw it as a new dare.

Kaya was published in 1978 and wasn't necessarily aimed at Americans, but it was an record that presented a more easily available Bob Marley one. From a lyrical point of view, the songs avoid the politics of comment or the rastafar philosophy that led Natty Dread and Rastaman Vibration, and instead emphasize melodies about romance and gangga, such as "Easy Skanking" and the cover music.

The perceptible musicial suspense that bubbled beneath the superficial layer on the Wailers' early footage gave way to a more relaxed ride that was more convenient but somewhat less challenging. While Kaya presented a more gentle and friendly portrayal of Bob Marley & the Wailers, he also recorded Marley and his group at the height of their game.

While the Wailers were able to cut a groovy that was both powerful muscle and apparently effortless, Aston " Family Man " Barrett and Carlton Barrett reaffirmed their position as one of the best rhythms in the world, and Junior Murvin and Marley offered a championship in how to apply the less is more approach to guitars.

Although Kaya had a less aggresive than Marley might have thought, the songs were far from idle and "Time Will Tell", "Is This Love" and "Running Away" are resounding, first class work. It was a small exertion for Bob Marley as a prophesy or narrator, but it is a wealthy and worthwhile kit from Marley, the singer.

By far the best Bob Marley record on Iceland.
